Virginia Bluebell
Mertensia virginica

  • Flower: Loose nodding clusters of 5 lobed trumpet-shaped flowers, pink initially then blue/violet. about 1" (2.5 cm) long; corolla 5-lobed.
  • Leaves: Basal leaves 2-8" (5-20 cm) long; stem leaves smaller, alternate, oval, untoothed.
  • Height: Bushy, to 36"
  • Habitat: Moist woods, floodplains, river banks.
  • Blooms: March-June.

Tall (12 to 36 inch) bushy plants are plentiful on sandy riverbanks and floodplains. Flowers are ocassionally pink or white.

 

 

 


 

Virginia Bluebells, which often have a pink color before fully open, occasionally retain it... white flowers are also rarely seen.
