White Dog-toothed violet
Erythronium albidum

  • Flower: A single white bell-shaped flower, nodding. 3 petals and 3 petal-like sepals, often bent backwards exposing six brown stamens.
  • Leaves: Basal leaves only; leaves entire,elliptical. May be mottled.
  • Height: to 10"
  • Habitat: Low, deciduous woods; thickets; floodplains
  • Blooms: April

Not really a violet, this early flower is a closely related to the Trout-lily, which is yellow instead of white and has somewhat broader mottled leaves. The yellow flower is much more common.
