Drooping Trillium
Trillium flexipes

  • Flower: About 1 1/2" wide; 3 petals white (rarely pink), recurved; 3 sepals, green; stamens 6, with pink anthers.
  • Leaves: 2 1/2-4" long, in a whorl of 3, diamond-shaped, barely stalked.
  • Height: 6-24"
  • Habitat: Moist, acidic woods and swamps.

The stalked flower of this trillium sometimes hangs face down below the leaves, but sometimes not... it also is variable in color, mostly white but sometimes purple. The distinguishing characteristics are: ovaries white or only tinged with purple, and the stamen filaments less than half the the length of the anthers (compare to Purple Trillium).

Yet another confusing species, Nodding Trillium (trillium cernuum) is restricted to a few areas of extreme NE Ohio. It is distinguished by having a white or pink-tinged ovary and filiments at least as long as anthers).
