Sessile Trillium (Toadshade)
Trillium sessile

  • Flower: 3 petals, reddish-brown or maroon; 3 sepals, green, spreading; stamens 6. 1" to 1 1/2" long .
  • Leaves: Three, 1 1/2Ñ6" (3.8-15 cm) long; unstalked, ovate; mottled light- and dark-green.
  • Height: 4-12"
  • Habitat: Rich woods.
  • Flowers April-June.

Also called "Toadshade" or "Toad Trillium." The flower is smaller and more closed than the other trilliums, and it lies close to the leaves rather than rising on a stalk. Usually appears a couple of weeks before the other trilliums.
