This flower is common, early, and short-lived. It gets its name from the distinctive mottled leaves, which supposedly resemble a trout's speckled back. Flower responds to sunshine by curling back even more. Also called "Adder's Tongue" or "Dog-tooth Violet," it closely resembles the White Dog-tooth Violet—neither of them is, however, a violet.
